RESULTS

Fighters from Nebraska, Kansas, South Dakota, Iowa and as far away as Ontario, Canada met in Omaha, NE at the Omaha Sports Complex on Saturday May 16, 2010 where the folks at Lights Out Promotions and the Thai Boxing Association - Sanctioning Authority (TBA-SA) put together a tune-up event for the upcoming TBA-SA Amateur National Championships in Des Moines, Iowa on July 10-12.

Eight fighters were making their muay thai in-ring debut when they stepped over the ropes and into the ring to battle it out for the fight fans. Although it may not have been one of the biggest cards in recent memory, it wasn’t lacking for hard kicking and heavy punching action in every fight from the opening bout to the main event.

Meeko Spainhower was scheduled to fight on the card until his opponent backed out at the weigh-ins without any explanation. The disposition of the fighter that backed out is to be determined by the TBA-SA. Dylan Pentecost, a teammate of Meeko’s, courageously stepped up with less than 2 hours notice and climbed into the ring with Meeko to give the fans a tremendous muay thai exhibition match.

The main event of the evening was a fight that the promoters had been trying to put together for nearly a year. They were finally able to bring Maria Bastisan from Ontario, Canada to Omaha, NE where she fought local fighter Melina Caniglia for the vacant TBA-SA Women’s Amateur North American Featherweight Title. The results of the night…

Bout #1 Men’s Amateur Middleweight
Jobet Roxas, 1-0-0, 24, 5’9”, 165 lbs., Papillion, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone,
vs
Tylor Kock, 0-1-0, 17, 5’10”, 159 lbs., Lennox SD, Next Edge Academy

Round 1 Each fighter stood in the middle of the ring determined not to get run over by the other. When one landed kicks or punches the other would answer with the same. As the round progressed, Kock appeared to be targeting Roxas’ head with his attacks while Roxas mixed it up by attacking the body of Kock as well as the head. They had a series of powerful exchanges throughout the round but the last few seconds of the round proved better for Roxas because he was able to land extra strikes to win the exchanges and the round on two judges’ cards.

Round 2 Roxas began the round working over the legs, body and head of Kock while Kock appeared content to be a headhunter. Roxas landed a right hook to Kock’s head that got a rise out of the crowd but didn’t appear to do any damage to Kock. Kock responded with hooks of his own toward Roxas’ head but Roxas was able to duck under the shots and continue to land powerful shots to Kock’s body which brought his hands down and allowed Roxas to land several stiff jabs to the face which bloodied Kock’s nose as the round was coming to an end. All judges scored the round for Roxas.

Round 3 Roxas charged a visibly tired Kock and threw 10-12 unanswered punches toward Kock’s head which backed Kock up and knocked his mouthpiece out. Referee Carl Duncan stopped time and admonished Kock for possibly spitting his mouthpiece out. When the fight continued, Kock tried to back Roxas up with a hard right to the head but was unable to follow up. Roxas became visibly tired toward the end of the round but at the 10 second warning he attacked with a final flurry that knocked Kock’s mouthpiece out before the bell rang to end the round. The judges scored the fight 29-28, 30-27 and 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Jobet Sean Bautista Roxas

Bout #2 Women’s Amateur Lightweight

Ruth Steadman, 1-0-0, 25, 5’7”, 131 lbs., Omaha, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone,
vs
Larissa Hawks, 0-1-0, 25, 5’4”, 130 lbs., Urbandale, IA, RoundKick Gym, Pete Peterson

Round 1 Each fighter began by standing in the middle of the ring and exchanged a series of ineffective flurries at each other. Steadman was the first to change her tactics when she threw her arms around Hawks’ neck and backed Hawks to the ropes with a series of knees and elbows to Hawks’ body. Steadman appeared to use her slight height advantage to lean on Hawks and control the clinch with knees to Hawks body. The edge in the round went to Steadman on all cards.

Round 2 Steadman continued what was working for her at the end of the last round. She grabbed Hawks around the neck and shoulders and continued to land hard knees to the body. Hawks went down forcing Referee Carl Duncan to step in. When Hawks stood up and turned her back to walk away, the referee was forced to issue her an 8-count. Steadman controlled the rest of the round with the clinch.

Round 3 Steadman did not appear to be as aggressive in this round possibly sensing she had the fight won. Hawks was successful in avoiding the clinch in the round which made it a little better round for her. All judges scored the fight 30-26.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – Ruth Steadman

Bout #3 Men’s Amateur Light Cruiserweight

Cedric Fagla, 1-1-0, 28, 181lbs., La Vista, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
John Griekspoor, 0-1-0, 21, 6’0”, 181 lbs., Wichita, KS, Team BTFU, Ron Griffey

Round 1 Griekspoor began by throwing wide looping punches to the head of Fagla. Fagla responded by stepping inside the punches and was able to land some straight left jabs followed by right upper cuts to the head of Griekspoor. Fagla threw some kicks to Griekspoor’s body which were caught by Griekspoor and then promptly dropped. They exchanged punches throughout the round with the edge going to Fagla in the round possibly due to more effective punches landed.

Round 2 Griekspoor, possibly sensing he lost the first round, attacks Fagla with power shots to Fagla’s head which forced Fagla to clinch with Griekspoor. Griekspoor responded with a knee to the body and then stepped back. The round then began to be a copy of the first round with Griekspoor throwing looping shots and Fagla throwing straight power shots. Griekspoor probably threw more strikes in the round but Fagla landed the more powerful strikes in the round earning him the edge on all cards.

Round 3 Griekspoor again initiated the action but when Fagla started answering back Griekspoor’s strategy appeared to be to wrap his arms around Fagla and knee the body. This strategy worked throughout the round as Fagla became visibly tired by Griekspoor pulling on his neck and shoulders. The edge in the round went to Griekspoor on all cards. All judges scored the fight 29-28.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Cedric Fagla

Bout #4 Men’s Amateur Super Middleweight

Michael Nebel, 1-0-0, 35, 172 lbs., Omaha, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Dylan Klinghagen, 0-1-0, 17, 5’10”, 170 lbs,. Lenox, SD, Next Edge Academy

Round 1 The round started with each fighter throwing wildly at the other. Nebel managed to throw a left/right combination which knocked Klinghagen’s head back and forced him to clinch with Nebel. In the clinch, Klinghagen was able to land knees and hooks to Nebel’s body which stalled Nebel’s attack. While in the clinch, Klinghagen lost his mouthpiece forcing Referee Carl Duncan to stop time and replace it. The fight got wild and furious at that point with both fighters landing power shots. In a close round where each fighter was credited with a low blow, the edge in the round went to Klinghagen on two judges’ cards.

Round 2 The round started with furious flurries by both fighters again which caused them to clinch to slow the place. While they were wrestling around in the clinch, Klinghagen slipped and went down on a knee. Referee Carl Duncan called a stop to the action as Nebel threw a punch at the downed Klinghagen that grazed the top of his head. Within his rights to deduct a point or disqualify Nebel, the referee chose to only administer a warning since Klinghagen appeared unhurt by the blow and wanted to continue. As the fight resumed, they were battling in a clinch when Nebel landed a powerful right upper cut to the chin of Klinghagen which stunned him and forced the referee to step in and issue an 8-count. Klinghagen wished to continue but when Nebel came at him, he was unable to avoid the onslaught which forced Referee Carl Duncan to step in and stop the fight at 1:53 of the round.

Winner by TKO – Michael Nebel

Bout #5 Men’s Amateur Light Welterweight

David Haith, 3-3-0, 21, 5’5”, 139 lbs., Omaha, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone
vs
Kevin Benson, 0-1-0, 20, 5’8”, 139 lbs., Papillion, NE, RCT, Ryan Stell

Round 1 The fighters swung hard at each other trying early to establish dominance. After several exchanges, Haith managed to back Benson into a corner and threw 10-12 left/right combinations at Benson. Benson was able to block most of the blows and was unhurt during the onslaught but he declined to answer back with blows of his own allowing Haith to rack up points and the edge on all judges’ cards.

Round 2 Haith came after Benson to start the round. Benson clinched with Haith and took a blow to the body which put him down on a knee. Benson was slow getting up forcing Referee Mike Storm to issue an 8-count. As the fight continued, Haith came at Benson again with the left/right combination flurries. This time, Benson was unable to block a substantial amount of the blows and was unable to fight back again forcing the referee to issue an 8-count.

Round 3 The final round was much like the previous two. Haith attacked with an untiring fury. He again forced Benson into another 8 count. Benson tried to fight back and landed some good blows in the round but it was too little too late. With a dominating performance, the judges scored the fight 30-24 on all cards.

Winner by Unanimous Decision – David Haith

David also won the honor of the “Fighter of the Night”

MAIN EVENT
Women’s Featherweight Amateur
Thai Boxing Association – Sanctioning Authority
North American Featherweight Championship

Melina Caniglia, 9-2-0, 20, 5’3”, 122 lbs., Omaha, NE, MidAmerica Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone,
vs
Maria Bastasin, 2-2-0, 28, 5’5”, 128 lbs., Stoney Creek, Ontario, Canada, Iron Tiger Muay Thai, Alin Halmagean

Round 1 In the first round, the fighters threw kicks, punches, knees, used clinches and attempted throws against each other in order to find each others weakness. Bastasin appeared to be the stronger of the two fighters but Caniglia appeared to be faster. Caniglia was able to land a larger volume of blows earning her the edge in the round on two cards.

Round 2 The round went much as the first except that Bastasin’s strength appeared to dictate the pace of the round. Caniglia threw kicks and punches at Bastasin but Bastasin landed the greater number of power shots earning her the edge in the round on two cards.

Round 3 After two rounds of getting hit by Bastasin’s strongest shots, Caniglia appeared unworried that Bastasin was going to hurt her. As her confidence grew, Caniglia stopped experimenting with different attacks and started throwing straight left/right shots of her own that appeared to frustrate Bastasin. For every power shot Bastasin would throw, Caniglia would throw two. Neither fighter was able to over-power the other but the volume of landed blows gave Caniglia the edge in the round on all cards.

Round 4 Caniglia showed no fear of Bastasin in this round. She surged forward looking for every opportunity to land a kick or punch to the head or body of Bastasin. Bastasin’s primary weapon this round was a front kick (teep) to the head or body of Caniglia. Caniglia simply waded through the single kick attempts and would land 3-4 punch/kick combinations on Bastasin. Bastasin spent most of the round backing away from Caniglia earning Caniglia the edge on all cards.

Round 5 Canaglia, confident she could not be stopped, pressed forward and landed left/right combinations to Bastasin’s head and body throughout the whole round. Bastasin continued landing teeps but would get tagged by Caniglia’s combinations every time she tried. The judges scored the fight 50-45, 49-46 and 48-47.
