The folks at “Lights Out Promotions” and “Mid America Martial Arts” put together a fantastic fight card sanctioned by the Thai Boxing Association - Sanctioning Authority on Saturday evening, February 7, 2009 in Omaha, Nebraska. Amateur men and women fighters from Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Missouri put on a Muay Thai kickboxing show for a thrilled crowd at the sold-out Tip Top Ballroom. Many fighters were in their debut fights but fought with the fury and ferocity of more experienced fighters. Those fighters with experience, not wanting to be outdone, brought their “A” game and together they gave the fans a night of knockdowns and knock-outs. The results of the night…

Bout #1 Men’s International Rules (Low Kick)
Teammates, Nick Weiss and Meeko Spainhower, both fighting out of the Mid America Martial Arts gym put on an International Rules or a Low Kick kickboxing exhibition. Although it was an exhibition, somebody forgot to tell the guys because they came at each other for a full three rounds and were rewarded with a standing ovation from the crowd in an opening bout that set the bar for the rest of the show. Judges unofficially scored the bout in favor of Spainhower. Great job, guys!!

Bout #2 Men’s Super Heavyweight Muay Thai
Ryan Smith, 27, 6’1”, 282, 0-1-0, Papillion, NE., Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Chris Moore, 28, 6’3”, 288, 2-0-0, Urbandale, IA., Pete Peterson, RoundKick Gym

Round 1 Both fighters began by trying to put the other down with one powerful punch but they only succeeded to get each others’ attention. They exchanged power shots throughout the first half of the round while occasionally clinching to slow the other down. During the second half of the round, Moore began throwing and landing leg kicks to Smith’s front leg. The kicks appeared to slow Smith’s advance and possibly gave Moore the edge in an otherwise even round. All judges gave the edge in the round to Moore.

Round 2 Smith began the round with a leg kick to Moore. Moore answered with a leg kick of his own. Smith landed a straight right to the face of Moore, Moore answered with a right hook to Smith’s head. They clinched and rolled around on the ropes until Referee Carl Duncan broke them up and restarted them in the center of the ring. The rest of the round continued as much of the first round started with each fighter trying to land power shots to the head of the other. In a close round, two of the judges gave the edge to Smith.

Round 3 Smith begins by landing several punches to Moore’s face. Moore answered with a right knee to Smith’s body and a straight right to Smith’s head that put him down and earned him an 8-count from Referee Carlton Duncan. As the fight continued, Moore came forward with a flurry of punches to the head of Smith. Smith backed into the ropes and turned away from Moore to avoid the blows which forced the referee to step in and stop the fight at :45 of the round. Winner by TKO—Chris Moore.

Bout #3 Men’s Middleweight Muay Thai
Eric Carraher, 25, 5’9”, 164, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE., Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Kuchlong Kuchlong, 22, 6’0”, 162, 1-0-0, Sioux Falls, SD, John Arends, Next Edge Academy

Round 1 Carraher, a very tough fighter, moved forward throughout the whole first round trying to trap Kuchlong into a corner. Kuchlong used superior footwork and effective counter-fighting skills to keep Carraher away and avoid blows. Carraher was able to keep his guard up and block many of Kuchlong’s counter punches but was unable to establish an effective offense of his own resulting in all three judges giving the edge in the round to Kuchlong.

Round 2 Carraher continued his aggressive tactics to start the second round but Kuchlong’s strategy changed. As Carraher came forward, Kuchlong stepped in and land a powerful knee to the body of Carraher which put Carraher down on a knee and earned him a standing 8-count from Referee Carlton Duncan. When the fight resumed, Carraher again moved toward Kuchlong. Kuchlong threw and landed a straight right punch to Carraher’s head that put him down again and forced the referee to step in and stop the fight at 1:06 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Kuchlong Kuchlong

As a result the victory, Kuchlong Kuchlong was awarded the honor of “Fighter of the Night”

Bout #4 Men’s Cruiserweight Muay Thai

Joshua Durham, 24, 6’5”, 186, 0-1-0, Elkhorn, NE., Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Arthur Van De Riet, 25, 6’0”, 188, 3-1-0, Fenton, MO., Fuad Keronovic, Vaghi Martial Arts

Round 1 As the round began, Durham came across and threw several left/right combinations to the head of Van De Riet. Van De Riet covered up and weathered the storm and then threw several kicks to the body of Durham. Van De Riet continued with the body shots causing Durham to clinch and stall the attack. Durham pushed Van De Riet away and into the ropes. Van De Riet used the ropes to propel himself towards Durham and land a well placed front kick (teep) into Durham’s chest that knocked Durham onto his back and earned him an 8-count from Referee Carlton Duncan when he did not attempt to get up. When the fight resumed, Durham threw a left/right combination at Van De Riet’s head but Van De Riet answered with a series of combinations of his own that backed Durham to the ropes. Once trapped against the ropes, Van De Riet landed more combinations that put Durham down as the round was coming to an end. The referee stepped in and issued a second 8-count as the bell rang to end the round and then allowed Durham to go to his corner to prepare for the next round.

Round 2 Durham moves forward with a couple of punches but Van De Riet throws a punch to the head and a kick to the body followed by a couple of knees and more punches and kicks which put Durham down again for another 8-count. Durham stands and eats a “Superman” punch from Van De Riet followed by a powerful left/right combination to the head that puts Durham down for the last time as Referee Carlton Duncan stepped in and stopped the fight at :47 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Arthur Van De Riet

Bout #5 Women’s Light Welterweight Muay Thai
Kelsey Wisinski, 18, 5’6”, 137, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE., Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Jessica Sorensen, 26, 139, 1-0-0, Omaha, NE., Tommy Todd, Midwest Taekwondo

Round 1 In their first fight in the ring, it appeared to be mostly a feeling out round to get used to the power of the other fighter. Wisinski started off the aggressor but Sorensen soon realized that she could return anything Wisinski could give her. Sorensen was the taller of the two fighters and toward the end of the round appeared to keep Wisinski at a safe distance with longer arms and legs. She appeared to have a little more power in her punches which is what possibly gave her the edge on all cards in a very close round.

Round 2 Wisinski tried to take the lead as the round started by throw a series of punches at Sorensen but Sorensen answered back with her own attack and didn’t back up for the rest of the round. Wisinski circle and waited for an opening but Sorensen pressed the attack and throughout the duration of the round she threw at least 5 “Superman” punches at Wisinski. Sorensen’s relentless attack did not do a tremendous amount of damage to Wisinski but it did score a lot of points with the judges. Wisinski was unable to mount much of an offense in the round. All judges scored the round for Sorensen.

Round 3 Wisinski came across the ring and threw a punch at Sorensen’s head but Sorensen answered with a straight right to Wisinski’s face that backed her up. Sorensen established her dominance by throwing 3 or 4 punches to every punch thrown by Wisinski. All judges scored the fight 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Jessica Sorensen

Bout #6 Men’s Light Middleweight Muay Thai
< Kevin Elliott, 32, 5’9”, 156, 1-0-0, Omaha, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Dylan Pentecost, 16, 5’4”, 156, 0-2-0, Papillion, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts

Round 1 Pentacost came out circling to his left throwing jabs and punches at Elliot that didn’t land. Elliott jumped forward with a flying knee that hit Pentacost in the body and put Pentacost down which forced Referee Terri Storm to step in. She asked Pentacost if he would be able to continue and he said he could not forcing her to stop the fight at :30 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Kevin Elliott

Bout #7 Men’s Light Cruiserweight Muay Thai
Jason Minor, 22, 185, 3-1-0, Omaha, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Jake McDonald, 17, 185, 0-3-0, Des Moines, IA, Pete Peterson, RoundKick Gym

Round 1 The first round was mostly a feeling out round for both fighters. Minor, the shorter, stronger, more compact fighter moved straight ahead trying to press the fight. McDonald, taller with longer arms and legs, managed to maintain a safe distance and effectively counter punch Minor and stifle his attacks which earned him the edge in the round on all scorecards.

Round 2 McDonald succeeded in landing a couple of left/right combinations to Minor’s head. Minor moved forward and clinched with McDonald where they exchanged a couple of knees. Minor twisted and threw McDonald down to the ground. McDonald stood up and Minor threw a left hook followed by a spinning backfist that grazed McDonald’s face and backed him to the corner. Minor grabbed McDonald around the neck and threw a series of knees to McDonald’s body. McDonald was unable to defend himself which forced Referee Terri Storm to step in and issue a standing 8-count as the bell rang to end the round.

Round 3 McDonald, realizing he’s down on the scorecards after the second round, attacked Minor with a flurry of punching combinations and kicks. Minor, still looking strong, was able to shrug most of the attack off and move toward McDonald and grab him around the neck again and work the body like in the previous round. McDonald tried to finish the round strong but wasn’t able to do enough to convince the judges. All judges scored the fight 29-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Jason Minor

Bout #8 Men’s Light Cruiserweight Muay Thai
Brent Pentacost, 21, 5’11”, 185, 0-2-0, Papillion, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Nicholas Boos, 20, 6’2”, 178, 1-0-0, Council Bluffs, IA, Tommy Todd, Midwest Taekwondo

Round 1 Boos attacked with a flurry of kicks and punches that backed Pentacost into a corner where he tied Boos up. While in the clinch, Pentacost proved to be the more effective fighter while Boos was only able to block. Realizing this, Boos pushed Pentacost away and continued kicking and punching from the outside. All judges gave the edge to Boos in the round.

Round 2 In this round, Pentacost was able to work in the clinch more and throw knees to Boos’ body. Boos, however, was able to work some body shots in with left and right hooks while on the inside in order to negate some of the knees. When Boos was able to separate from Pentacost, they exchanged kicks and punches at a fairly even rate. In a very close round, two of the judges gave a slight edge to Boos.

Round 3 Pentacost was able to work the clinch with knees and punches so he continued to try to pin Boos against the ropes. Boos appeared to be happy to keep Pentacost at a safe distance and away from the clinch by throwing a variety of kicks to the legs and body of Pentacost. In another close round, again two of the judges gave the edge to Boos. The judges scored the fight 30-27, 29-28 and 29-28.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Nicholas Boos

Bout #9 Men’s Light Middleweight Muay Thai
Zach Powers, 19, 5’11”, 159, 2-1-0, Omaha, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts vs
Corey McDonald, 19, 5’9”, 155, 3-1-0, Des Moines, IA, Pete Peterson, RoundKick Gym

Round 1 McDonald began with a series of leg kicks and left/right combinations against Powers. Powers responds with several strong straight punches to the face of McDonald that backed McDonald away. McDonald threw an upper cut that landed, separated the fighters and slowed the pace of the round. Each fighter earned the others respect and finished the round more cautiously clinching several times to stall each other. The judges gave the edge in a very close round to Powers.

Round 2 Powers tried to utilize the straight power shots to McDonald’s head but McDonald was able to clinch with Powers to stall the attack. Both fighters exchanged knees to the body while in the clinch but Powers began landing elbows to McDonald’s mid section and continued to do so throughout much of the round earning him the edge on all scorecards in the round.

Round 3 A strong round for Powers where he was able to land the punches to McDonald’s face and head. He backed McDonald into the corner where McDonald tried to clinch and block an onslaught of 8 to 9 knees to his body. Powers stepped back, let McDonald out and then landed a “Superman” punch to McDonald’s head. McDonald stood strong and handled much of what Powers threw but not strong enough to win the round. All judges scored the fight 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Zach Powers

Bout #10 Men’s Cruiserweight Muay Thai
Brandon Atkins, 27, 6’1”, 193, 1-0-0, Bellevue, NE, Aaron Cerrone, Mid America Martial Arts, vs
Quinton O’Brien, 27, 6’2”, 196, 4-2-0, Maryland Heights, MO, Fuad Keronovic, Vaghi Martial Arts

Round 1 Both fighters exchanged shots to begin the round. Atkins landed a strong punch to O’Brien’s head and O’Brien responded with a kick to Atkins’ head. Neither fighter backed away in the exchange. Atkins tried to stay busy throwing kicks and punches to O’Brien’s head and body but O’Brien was able to take most of the blows on his arms. In a close round, Atkins got the slight edge on all cards for possibly being the busier of the two fighters.

Round 2 Atkins is successful in landing strong shots to the head and body of O’Brien. O’Brien, the more experienced fighter, used his “ring smarts” to move in and tried to work from a clinch with knees to Atkins’ body. Atkins was able to tie O’Brien up and stall the action. This happened several times in the round and each time Referee Mike Storm was forced to step in and separate the fighters. Upon each separation, Atkins appeared very tired but O’Brien failed to take advantage and took his time moving in on Atkins. Atkins continued to land a few punches before he would tie O’Brien up in the clinch which rendered O’Brien’s offense less effective and earned Atkins the edge in the round on all scorecards.

Round 3 O’Brien finally took advantage of an exhausted Atkins in the last round. He backed Atkins against the ropes and throws knees and kicks to the body. When it appeared he was nearly finished however, Atkins would respond with one or two power punches which would back O’Brien away and force him to start his attack again. The punches by Atkins were enough to allow him to survive but not win a very strong round for O’Brien.

In a good fight, all judges scored the fight 29-28. Winner by Unanimous Decision—Brandon Atkins
