Lights Out Promotions hit another home run on Saturday, September 13, 2008 with their third Muay Thai extravaganza. They electrified an already pumped up crowd that was entertained by the band “6 String Willy” that rocked before the fights started at InPlay in Omaha, Nebraska.

28 amateur fighters from Nebraska, Kansas, Minnesota and Missouri came to show their best in 14 fights highlighted by two title fights sanctioned through the Thai Boxing Association-Sanctioning Authority. The co-main events were fought for the TBA-SA Women’s Amateur Bantamweight Title contested between Melina Caniglia of Omaha, NE and Ashley Cummins of St. Louis, MO and the TBS-SA Men’s Amateur Middleweight Title contested between Drew Dober of Omaha, NE and Elmir Kulosman of St. Louis, MO.

The results of the night…

Bout #1 Welterweights

Dylan Pentecost, 0-1-0, Papillion, NE, vs Alex Nguyen, 1-1-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 Nguyen began the fight by moving forward and throwing leg kicks at Pentecost. Pentecost responded by backing away and throwing looping counter punches which appeared to do little damage to Nguyen. Throughout the majority of the round, Nguyen stalked Pentecost and moved him around the ring without either fighter doing much damage to the other. All judges scored the round to Nguyen.

Round 2 Pentecost began the round a little more aggressively. He charged Nguyen with a flurry of punches that didn’t seem to bother Nguyen. Nguyen grabbed Pentecost around the neck and tied him up to halt the charge. He then stepped back and threw a series of left/right combinations followed by an upper cut that opened Pentecost’s eyes and made him back away. Pentecost tried to charge again but Nguyen answered with a pair of straight left/right combinations to the head of Pentecost and again forced Pentecost back. Nguyen then moved in while continuing the punches and made Pentecost turn away to avoid being hit which forced Referee Carl Duncan to step in and issue him a standing 8 count. The rest of the round saw Nguyen press forward and Pentecost backpedal or clinch Nguyen to stifle the punches.

Round 3 Better for Pentecost as he is able to stick and move around the ring. As Nguyen continued to move forward with the stronger straight punches, Pentecost managed to tie him up and deliver a few knees in the clinch before pushing Nguyen off. Although Pentecost was able to land a few shots, the judges still gave the round to Nguyen for throwing the more effective shots in the round. All judges scored the round 30-26.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Alex Nguyen

Bout #2 Super Heavyweights

Daniel Copenharve, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE vs Cooper Sanders, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 At the beginning of the round both fighters tried to establish dominance by throwing a kick or a punch only to have the other answer with kicks and punches in return. Soon Sanders became determined to be the aggressor by moving forward but Copenharve did very well with the straight left/right combination to Sanders head as he retreated. When Sanders got too close, Copenharve was able to tie him up and throw a series of knees to Sanders’ body while in the clinch. Although Sanders was the aggressor, Copenharve proved to be a better counter puncher and stronger in the clinch earning him the round on all judges cards.

Round 2 Sanders was determined to remain the aggressor. As he came forward, Copenharve continued to counter punch but Sanders started working the body more with punches that appeared to wear Copenharve down as the round progressed. Sanders landed a round kick to Copenharve’s head that backed him up to the ropes and forced him to hold on. The body shots Sanders landed throughout the round must have had the desired effect because as the bell rang, Copenharve appeared to be very tired. All judges gave the round to Sanders.

Round 3 Sanders goes from a body attack in the second round to strong combinations to the head of Copenharve in this round while Copenharve’s strong counter punching in the first round turn to wild and ineffective punches in the third. Toward the end of the round, Sanders worked from the bottom up with kicks to the legs and body of a weary Copenharve and finished with straight punches to the head. All judges scored the fight 29-28.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Cooper Sanders

Bout #3 Cruiserweights

Brent Pentecost, 0-1-0, Papillion, NE vs Chris Mitchell, 2-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 Pentecost came across with a flurry of punches at Mitchell that caused him to back up and cover. Pentecost appeared to confuse Mitchell at first but as the round progressed, Mitchell was able to settle down and stall Pentecost’s brawling style with left/left/right combinations to the head and front kicks to the body and leg kicks that had Pentecost backing up by the end of the round. Although Pentecost was the aggressor in the beginning of the round, Mitchell was able to take control by finishing as the stronger fighter in the end of the round. In a very close round, all judges gave the edge to Mitchell.

Round 2 Pentecost tried to begin as a brawler as the round started but Mitchell remained poised and used his left/right combinations to the head and began throwing kicks to the legs and body of Pentecost to keep him at a working distance. Pentecost, a very tough fighter, was able to block or absorb many of Mitchell’s shots but was never able to get close enough to inflict enough damage to win the round.

Round 3 Again the brawling style of Pentecost is disrupted by the shorter, stronger inside punches of Mitchell. Mitchell is able to tie Pentecost up and land a few knees while in the clinch but as the round progressed, both fighters began to show fatigue and many of the clinches ended up by rolling around on the ropes only to be broken up by Referee Carl Duncan. Two very weary fighters were leaning and pushing on each other as the fight ended. All judges scored the fight 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Chris Mitchell

Bout #4 Light Welterweights

Yury Slonsky, 0-1-0, Omaha, NE vs Sean Paulson, 1-0-0, Plymouth, MN

Round 1 Both fighters exchanged a lot of kicks before a punch was ever thrown in the round. It was a matter of give and take when one would throw a kick to the leg or body, the other would answer with the same. As the round moved on, Paulson began throwing a series of sharp left/right combinations to Slonsky’s face which forced him to back away. The round was even with the kicking combinations until Paulson took the edge with the strong punches to Slonsky’s face as the round ended. All judges gave the round to Paulson.

Round 2 Paulson realized that he was hurting Slonsky with the strong left/right combinations to the face so he gave up the kicks and attacked Slonsky’s head. When Slonsky would clinch, Paulson would stick his knees in Slonsky’s body forcing Slonsky to push away only to get punched in the face again. He turned his back on Paulson which made Referee Carl Duncan step in and issue a standing 8 count. Paulson moved in with more of the same. He cornered Slonsky toward the end of the round and pummeled his head and body. Slonsky covered up but failed to fight back which earned him a second standing 8 count shortly before the end of the round.

Round 3 Paulson continued where he left off in the second round. Punches to the face of Slonsky earned another standing 8 count. When the fight resumed, Paulson began a series of kicks to the body and head of Slonsky only to be followed by more punches to the head. Referee Carl Duncan stepped in at 1:28 of the round and stopped the fight when Slonsky was unable to keep his hands up to block the shots.

Winner by TKO—Sean Paulson

Bout #5 Welterweights

Andrew Reyes, 0-1-0, Bellevue, NE vs Andrew Robare, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 Robare attacked with a bullying, brawling style which caused Reyes to grab and hold him more than fight back. In the clinch, they rolled around on the ropes until Referee Carl Duncan would separate them and then it would begin again. All judges gave the round to Robare.

Round 2 Reyes tried to get off first to slowdown Robare’s brawling style. He was able to land punches to Robare’s head which slowed him a bit but not completely. Robare began throwing leg kicks at Reyes’ front leg and some obviously hurt Reyes because he winced as the kicks landed. Reyes was forced to tie Robare up and they rolled around on the ropes. As the round was coming to an end, Robare wrapped his arms around Reyes’ waist and bent him backwards over the ropes causing the referee to stop time for Reyes to recover from a possible back injury. When the doctor determined Reyes could continue, Referee Carl Duncan deducted 1 point from Robare for the foul. The round ended soon after that. The judges scored the round for Robare, but with the point deduction, it ended up an even round.

Round 3 Reyes attacked with a fury as he tried to change the tone of the fight. Robare answered with a left/right combination to Reyes’ head which backed him up. Reyes tried again to go after Robare but Robare shrugged him off and landed strong punches to the head and body of Reyes. Reyes threw a lot of strikes but were for the most part, ineffective. All judges scored the fight 29-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Andrew Robare

Bout #6 Super Middleweights

Ryan Stoddard, 0-1-0, Bellevue, NE vs Paul Vo, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 During the round, the fighters exchanged strikes with neither gettting a significant edge. Vo appeared to want to take control by moving forward but was unable to dominate the round. In a very close round where two judges scored it for Vo and one judge gave it to Stoddard, the most powerful shots that landed where an exchange of low blows.

Round 2 Neither fighter was initially able to get a clear upper hand. Stoddard was able to land a few front kicks to Vo’s body and then tie him up to prevent retaliation from Vo. In a close round where they found themselves fighting in a clinch, all judges gave the edge to Stoddard.

Round 3 Vo began moving forward and landed straight left/right combinations through Stoddard’s wild looping punches. Stoddard threw an ineffective “Superman” punch and ate a left hook for it. He then threw kicks at Vo’s body and suffered with another series of punches that backed him into the corner. As the bell rang to end the fight, a tired Stoddard was pressed in the corner trying to block Vo’s knees. The judges scored the fight 29-28, 28-29 and 29-28.

Winner by Split Decision—Paul Vo

Bout #7 Welterweights

Dennis Potabenko, 2-1-0, Minneapolis, MN vs Cody Bitler, 0-1-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 They threw power shots at each other for most of the round but both fighters were able to block the majority of them. As the round progress, Potabenko began to land punches to the head and body of Bitler. Bitler continued to throw power shots but not enough landed to bother Potabenko. In the closing seconds of the round, Bitler charged in and started to land shots as the bell rang in an attempt to steal the round but it was too little too late since all judges scored the round for Potabenko.

Round 2 In a round that showed less action than the first, the blows that were thrown were still very powerful and this time many more landed than were blocked. In a closely scored round where both fighters landed, two judges gave the round to Potabenko and one to Bitler.

Round 3 Potabenko opened with a leg kick and then a kick to the head. Bitler answered with a kick which Potabenko caught and then kicked Bitler’s supporting leg out from under him. Potabenko began stalking Bitler. Bitler threw another kick that is caught and again got his supporting leg kicked out. As the round closed, Potabenko landed a kick to the head of Bitler that assured Potabenko the edge in the round. The judges scored the fight 30-27, 29-28 and 30-27.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—Dennis Potabenko

Bout #8 Light Heavyweights

Mike Hough, 1-1-0, Omaha, NE vs David Rickels, 4-1-0, Derby, KS

Hough opened with a front kick that Rickels backed away from. Hough threw a left/right combination that was answered by a flurry of punches by Rickels. Hough tied Rickels up so Rickels started throwing a series of knees to Hough’s body. Hough pushed him away so Rickels jumped in with a left hook/ straight right to Hough’s head and followed it with another knee to Hough’s body that put him down and earned him a standing 8 count from Referee Terri Storm. As the fight resumed, Rickels came in with a left/right combination to Hough’s head and followed it with another knee to the body earning a second 8 count. Rickels came right back and grabbed Hough around the head and finished with more knees forcing Referee Terri Storm to step in at 1:53 of the round.

Winner by TKO—David Rickels

Bout #9 Heavyweights

Ron Waschkowski, 0-3-0, Omaha, NE vs Roger Woodcook, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 Waschkowski started with wild punches that didn’t seem to bother Woodcook. Woodcook threw a knee to the body, a punch to the head and another knee to Waschkowski’s body that pushed Waschkowski through the ropes. Woodcook, the taller of the two, used his reach to keep Waschkowski away and was able to work Waschkowski into a corner where he started to tee off on him with a flurry of punches. Waschkowski was able to block most of the shots but allowed Woodcook to earn favor with judges by being the aggressor.

Round 2 Waschkowski threw more wild punches that allowed Woodcook to move in and clinch Waschkowski. In the clinch, Woodcook threw knees to the body and thighs of Waschkowski. Referee Terri Storm stepped in and issued a standing 8 count when Waschkowski failed to fight back. Woodcook again moved in with punches to the head and knees to the body of Waschkowski. Waschkowski fell against the ropes and was held up by the ropes so Referee Terri Storm stepped in to issue another 8 count as Waschkowsi’s corner threw in the towel at 1:11 of the round.

Winner by TKO—Roger Woodcook

Bout #10 Cruiserweights

Dan Rau, 1-5-0, LaVista, NE vs Quinton O’Brien, 2-1-0, Maryland Heights, MO

Round 1 O’Brien, the taller fighter, used a lot of front kicks and leg kicks to keep Rau away. Rau threw an occasional leg kick of his own and followed them with hooks to O’Brien’s body but O’Brien was able to keep Rau back most of the round. Rau threw a left hook at O’Brien but O’Brien threw a right round kick over it and hit Rau in the head that put him down and earned him an 8 count from Referee Terri Storm.

Round 2 They exchanged leg kicks as the round began. O’Brien then attacked with a jumping knee to Rau’s body that put Rau down and forced Referee Terri Storm to give him a standing 8 count. Rau tried to fight back but O’Brien stepped in and threw two more knees that put Rau down for a second 8 count. As the fight resumed, Rau caught O’Brien’s leg and pushed him down, flash knockdown. O’Brien stood and went back after Rau’s body with the knees. At 1:58 of the round, Referee Terri Storm stepped in and stopped the fight when Rau went down a third time.

Winner by TKO—Quinton O’Brien

This fine exhibition of Muay Thai knees by Quinton O’Brien earned him the honor of being recognized and awarded the trophy for “Fighter of the Night”

Bout #11 Light Welterweights

David Haith, 2-2-0, Omaha, NE vs Dino Lopez, 1-1-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 In what appeared to be an evenly contested match, both fighters hit each other with some solid kicks and punches. When one began to get the upper hand, the other would grab him and turn him into the ropes. Haith managed a strong knee to Lopez’s mid section and put him down earning an 8 count from Referee Mike Storm when Lopez was slow to get up. Lopez tried to come back at the end of the round but wasn’t left with enough time.

Round 2 The round began much like the first did with each fighter trying to get the advantage. Lopez threw kicks while Haith stepped inside and hit Lopez with his fists. Haith stepped inside and forced Lopez to grab him around the neck. When he did, Haith gave him two strong knees to the body and put Lopez down earning an 8 count. While Lopez was down, Haith then stepped in and punched Lopez twice while he was down which forced Referee Mike Storm to then take a point away from Haith shortly before the round ended.

Round 3 Lopez attacked Haith with leg kicks but Haith began using effective left/right combinations and leg and body kicks of his own to continue to soften Lopez up. Haith was able to get inside and work Lopez to the body once again. He put Lopez down for an 8 count again in the final round earning him the edge in the round. All judges scored the fight 29-24.

Winner by Unanimous Decision—David Haith

Bout #12 Light Cruiserweights

Jason Minor, 1-1-0, Papillion, NE vs Darren Swink, 1-0-0, Wichita, KS

Round 1 Minor came forward and punched Swink in the head and body several times before Swink was able to answer back. Swink appeared to be a bit overwhelmed at first but eventually settled down and began hitting Minor with leg kicks. Minor stalled Swink with a jumping knee to the body that backed Swink up and then hit Swink with a punch that staggered him. Minor failed to move in and follow up which allowed Swink to recover. A round dominated by Minor earned him the edge on all cards.

Round 2 Minor came across with a series of unanswered kicks. Swink clinched and took three knees to the body that dropped him. Referee Mike Storm stepped in at 1:17 of the round and counted to 10 to end the fight.

Winner by KO (Body Shot)—Jason Minor

Bout #13 Women’s Amateur Bantamweight Title

Melina Caniglia, 2-2-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone, vs, Ashley Cummins, 3-2-0, Chesterfield, MO, Vaghi Martial Arts, Fuad Keronavic

Round 1 The fighters began with even exchanges of kicks and punches. As the round progressed, Cummins relied more on leg kicks and front kicks to Caniglia’s body. Caniglia would answer with jabs and hooks to Cummins head. As the round continued to press on, Caniglia appeared to get stronger. She threw a series of 5 or 6 unanswered jab/hook combinations and forced Cummins to clinch where they both worked the other over with knees. As the round ended, Caniglia appeared to be the stronger of the two receiving the edge in the round on all judges’ cards.

Round 2 Caniglia continued to throw 5 and 6 punch/kick combinations that Cummins was unable to stop. Cummins would be forced to clinch to keep from getting punched in the face but Caniglia would push her back and continued to hit her. Caniglia again appeared to grow stronger as the round progressed as she kneed Cummins in the clinch and punched and kicked her from the outside.

Round 3 Caniglia used more kicks to Cummins body this round with only an occasional punch to the face and body of Cummins. Cummins appeared unable to get many blows off due to the fact that Caniglia was overwhelming her with her own kicks.

Round 4 Caniglia came after Cummins with everything from round kicks to the head, body and legs of Cummins to jabs and crosses to the head and body. Nearly everything she threw at Cummins landed leaving Cummins with no choice but grab hold and tie her up. The few shots that Cummins was able to land were not effective enough to stop Caniglia from her goal. Cummins was a tough fighter who never gave up and never went down but this night, Caniglia would not be denied. All judges scored the fight 40-36.

Winner by Unanimous Decision
TBA-SA Women’s Amateur Bantamweight Champion Melina Caniglia

Bout #14 Men’s Amateur Middleweight Title

Drew Dober, 6-1-0, Omaha, NE, Mid America Martial Arts, Aaron Cerrone, vs, Elmir Kulosman, 4-2-0, Vaghi Martial Arts, St. Louis, MO, Fuad Keranovic

Round 1 The round started slow as each fighter was being cautious. Dober would throw kicks at Kulosman who would deflect them or slip back and avoid them. He backed Kulosman into the corner and started with powerful leg kicks followed up by left hooks to the head which were getting through to their target as the round ended.

Round 2 They exchanged leg kicks to start the round. Dober stepped forward and landed a solid jab/cross combination that hit Kulosman in the face and drove him into the ropes and down to the canvas earning him an 8 count. Dober moved in again with a two punch combination that put Kulosman down again with a severely bloodied nose. Referee Mike Storm issued another 8 count as Kulosman said he wanted to continue. Dober made one final attack as Referee Mike Storm stepped in and stopped the fight at 1:19 of the round.
